After reading the last few pages of, "Growing a Farmer, my first impressions of the book have vastly changed. I believe that Kurt did a phenomenal
job on taking us through his journey of hardships and successes. The great
detail in which he describes the various obstacles he had to overcome for each
aspect of his farm only made visualizing the events and his settings that much easier. Also, the
amount of knowledge that I gained about farms just from reading this book is
astounding. The chapter regarding the raw milk was very interesting due to the fact
that I had no idea that there was an actual demand for raw milk, I never even knew
that raw milk was even a thing.
Some other great chapters that grabbed my attention were the “Slaughter
and Butchering” chapters. Due to always living in cities I have never been close
to or even thought of a moment where I would have to get my meat from somewhere
other than the store down the road. I never realized how much work goes into slaughtering
and butchering animals for food that we normally see everyday at our local butcher and
grocery stores. After reading the chapters, it is hard to say that you will not gain a new found respect for farmers.
The journey that Kurt took us through in this book is
stunning. Starting a new venture by purchasing a land to build a farm is
not something you will see everyday. The amount of detail he puts in every
chapter helps us grow with him, watching him actually “grow into a farmer”. It was
a delight reading the new additions to the farm starting from the bees, the
animals, the orchard, and everything else that helped make that patch of land turn into
the farm it is today. After reading this book I not only have a deeper
understanding of how a farm may operate, but the respect for anyone who has enough
passion and perseverance to pursue what Kurt has.
